The Crisis: A Beloved Game Facing Extinction

In October 2018, Portalus Games announced the closure of Pirates of the Burning Sea — a critically acclaimed naval MMORPG with over a decade of history and hundreds of thousands of invested players.

Pirates of the Burning Sea

  • Naval MMORPG set in 1720 Caribbean
  • Originally by Flying Lab Software / SOE (2008)
  • DICE Award nominee for Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year (2009)
  • 76% on GameRankings — critically acclaimed
  • Tactical ship combat, melee duels, player-driven economy
  • Multi-faction PvP with port contention battles

What Was at Stake

  • Game facing permanent shutdown
  • Hundreds of thousands of players losing years of investment
  • IP value decaying toward zero
  • Community scattered and displaced
  • Negative press and player backlash
  • Gaming history erased permanently
"When Portalus announced closure, I thought Pirates of the Burning Sea was gone forever. Vision saved it and kept our crew sailing."
— Jamie Rivera, PotBS Captain since 2008

The Intervention: Vision Takes Over

Vision Online Games stepped in to preserve the game through a licensing arrangement — taking on all operational responsibility while the original IP owner retained ownership.

Codebase Modernization

Upgraded from Visual Studio 2005 to VS2019. Resurrected dormant Development Environment and Build System after years of dormancy.

Infrastructure Overhaul

96-core Dell PowerEdge R830 with 768 GB RAM, RAID-60 SSD array, 40 Gbps InfiniBand, 10 Gbps fiber. Later upgraded to 100 Gbps.

Network Rebuilt

Full UDP→TCP migration eliminating rubberbanding, stuttering, and unexpected disconnects. Multi-threaded patch downloads with 32 threads.

Graphics Overhaul

Enhanced LOD, max default settings (unchanged for 15+ years), FOV slider, adjustable camera height — all now standard.

Economy Reformed

NPC Market Seeding overhaul, Trade Goods return, all-region Auction House visibility, direct-buy from sellers, minimum listing price enforcement.

Multi-Language System

Custom six-layer transformer delivering real-time chat translation across EN/FR/DE/ES/RU/PT in microseconds — in-game and on Discord.

The Business Case: Why Licensing Beats Shutdown

For publishers facing an end-of-life online title, the choice isn't between shutdown and keeping it alive. It's between shutdown (total loss) and licensing (ongoing gain).

Factor Shutdown Path Vision Licensing Path
Operational Costs Continuing until shutdown ($420K–$1.56M/year) Eliminated instantly — Vision assumes all costs
Legal Liability Remains with publisher until service is terminated Transferred to Vision as operating partner
Revenue Impact Total loss — revenue goes to zero overnight Ongoing licensing fees as long as game operates
IP Value Decays to zero — brand becomes irrelevant Retained by publisher, value extended indefinitely
Player Sentiment Negative — "publisher killed our game" Positive — "publisher found the game a new home"
Press Coverage Negative — shutdown announcements generate bad press Neutral to positive — preservation is a story worth telling
Publisher Effort Significant — announcement, transition, wind-down Minimal — conversation, agreement, done
